While the all-new replacement for the Honda Accord will eventually enter Australia’s showrooms later this year, a steady decline in medium and large sedan sales has pushed Honda’s local office to adopt a new strategy for its four-icon doors.
The ninth generation Honda Accord entered production in 2012, with a locally peeled lineup back to a span of two variants during the following years — just a four-cylinder VTi-L base, and a V6-motorized V6L. More recently in 2016 the range includes a total of five variants, ranging from $32,990 to $58,990 and including hybrid options.
The tenth-generation replacement (photo) has been available abroad for more than a year, although the new right-hand version of the drive starts at the end of 2018. The car arrives in the fourth quarter of 2019, but the message of Honda is this: don’t expect it cheap.
“What I can say is that we will plan to make Accord just as top-spec, with two variant engines: a traditional petrol engine and hybrid setting,” said Honda Australia general manager Stephen Collins.
“I don’t need to tell you that the segment is very challenging, so we won’t pursue a significant volume on that car,” he continued. “I don’t have the volume to talk about today or the price, but we’ll position it more as a premium product in that segment. We are loyal to Accord, and it will be sold towards the end of this year. “
But while Toyota’s rival brand succeeded in offering a Camry midryer at a price point below $30,000, Collins said the numbers were not suitable for Honda. Instead, pursuing customers with higher margins through the featured feature seems to be a better strategy, even if the sales volume will be lower.
“I think the reality is that from the perspective of our business case can not compete with the Accord in $29,990. If we can, we will do it, but we can not. But as a flagship product and a niche type, we see it as a way to progress. ”
This is a strategy that is undoubtedly led by the strong performance of Honda with private purchasers (or, read other ways, its poor performance with the fleet). While Camry captivated itself on taxi operators, government departments, and other organisations requiring a large fleet, Honda Australia was not interested in pursuing the automotive market side. Instead, he intends to play with his powers.
“We measure ourselves with personal sales,” Jelas Collins. “Our brand is very much about personal sales to mom and dad. Last year we officially finished fourth in the overall personal sales in the total market-we missed the third with 43 units. Our goal this year is to defend that rank. ”
“The hatch segment survives quite well, but the sedan segment is declining. However it is a big decision to leave brands like [Accord] Although the market is being tough. “
Accord 10th generation will be launched here with only two powertrain options, conventional petrol and gasoline-electric hybrids. But there is no definite specification yet, we expect gasoline offerings to be 188kW/370Nm 2.0 liters of the four-wheel turbo inline (which replaces the V6 option and is an triggered version of the Honda Civic Type R power station Turbo) and the hybrid is similar to 158kW/314Nm 2.0-liter gasoline-US market.
The price remains a mystery for now, but Collin’s instructions are obvious – don’t expect the New covenant to be bargaining as it used to be.
